SUMMER PROGRAM

VANCOUVER PROGRAM FOCUS

Summer students at Gowlings Vancouver are available to work with lawyers and agents in all of our major practice areas: Advocacy, Business Law and Intellectual Property, each of which includes a number of specialty groups. Over the summer, students discover the scope and intricacy of our various disciplines and are encouraged to seek work in particular areas of interest.

Gowlings Vancouver generally hires three summer students each year.

PRACTICE AREAS & INDUSTRIES

The Gowlings Vancouver Summer Program focuses on all of our three major practice areas – Business Law, Intellectual Property or Advocacy.

Our business law group includes general corporate/commercial, tax, corporate finance, financial services, real estate and environmental law. Our litigation practice includes commercial litigation, banking litigation, employment and labour law, insurance and professional liability, product liability, health law and class actions. And finally, our Intellectual Property practice covers areas such as patents, trademarks, copyright, technology, franchising and marketing/advertising law.

With a broad clientele of regional, national and multinational organizations, Gowlings Vancouver provides students with exposure to a wide variety of industries including Financial Services, Mining, Manufacturing, Technology and Life Sciences. We also have a strong focus on international practices including our China initiative and our U.S. initiative.

RECRUITMENT INFORMATION

We are looking for well-rounded individuals who possess strong academic records and sound judgment. In addition to academic achievement and extra-curricular experience, our group gives preference to individuals who demonstrate the personal values likely to make them compatible members of our Firm.

What is perhaps most important for us – and for our summer students – is finding a “good fit”. We highly value teamwork and a “we” approach to practicing law.

Gowlings Vancouver recruits according to the Vancouver Bar Association guidelines. Please visit http://www.vancouverbar.ca for further information on these guidelines.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

Gowlings Vancouver provides a rewarding and educational summer work experience. We actively develop our students through educational programs that provide insight, evaluation and hands-on experience with various areas of the law. Our seminar program spans a wide variety of practice areas, and our mentoring programs, with junior or senior associates acting as summer student mentors, provide students with opportunities to work with – and learn from – our diverse and experienced professionals. Our students are also encouraged to define their own development, and to seek out and experience the work in which they are most interested.

STUDENT WORK LOAD

While we do not set a target number of hours for our students, they are generally expected to carry a workload similar to that of our associates.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Our commitment to our students includes a competitive salary, based on the market rate for articling students—currently $45,000 per annum, plus vacation pay. Summer students also receive $4,000 towards third year tuition.

SOCIAL PROGRAM

We recognize that the demands of the practice should be balanced with a lawyer's need for satisfaction and fulfillment in other areas. Associate and student activities are organized by an associate’s social committee. Past events have included baseball games, beach days, pitch and putt, and other casual get togethers.
