SUMMER PROGRAM

CALGARY PROGRAM FOCUS

Gowlings Calgary office typically hires three summer students each year. Summer students are exposed to a wide array of interesting and challenging work in all of our three practice areas during their tenure and have the opportunity to meet and work with many of our lawyers. Applications are received until early September (all universities outside of Alberta) and early October (University of Calgary and University of Alberta) and interviews are typically held in September and October.

PRACTICE AREAS & INDUSTRIES

The Gowlings Calgary Summer Program generally focuses on one of our three major practice areas – business law, intellectual property or advocacy.

Our Business Law practice provides students with exposure to most areas of business law, including general corporate/commercial, technology, tax, energy, corporate finance, financial services, real estate and environmental law. Similarly, students will gain experience with our advocacy group in most areas of our litigation practice, such as commercial litigation, banking litigation, employment and labour law, insurance and professional liability, product liability, health law, construction and class actions. And finally, our Intellectual Property practice covers areas such as patents, trademarks, copyright, industrial design and marketing/advertising.

With a broad clientele of national and multinational organizations, Gowlings Calgary provides students with exposure to a wide variety of industries including Energy, Financial Services, Infrastructure, Mining, Manufacturing, Technology and Life Sciences.

RECRUITMENT INFORMATION

We are looking for dedicated, well-rounded individuals who are not only passionate about the practice of law and the pursuit of excellence, but who maintain interests outside of school and work. Given that much of our work requires the collaboration of many professionals, often from different practice areas, we seek out individuals who are, not only motivated self-starters, but who work well in a teamwork environment.

Applications are accepted only from second year students and hiring decisions are made in November for commencement of summer employment in early May.

Gowlings Calgary typically hires 3 or 4 students for its summer program.

STUDENT WORK LOAD

We do not set students a target number of billable hours. While we expect our students to record their time and to carry a workload similar to that of our associates, the emphasis of our articling program is on learning and skills development. The annual budget for Gowlings Calgary Associates is 1750 docketed or billable hours or approximately 35 docketed hours per week.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

Gowlings Calgary provides a rewarding and educational summer work experience. We actively develop our students through educational programs that provide insight, evaluation and hands-on experience with various areas of the law. Our comprehensive seminar program spans a wide variety of practice areas, and our constructive mentoring programs provide students with opportunities to work with – and learn from – our diverse and experienced professionals. Our students are also encouraged to define their own development, and to seek out and experience the work in which they are most interested.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Our commitment to our students includes a competitive salary, based on the market rate for articling students. Summer students' salaries are currently $5,000.00 prorated monthly, plus vacation pay.

SOCIAL PROGRAM

We recognize that the demands of the practice should be balanced with a lawyer's need for satisfaction and fulfillment in other areas. Firm activities (many of which are organized by the firm's "Fun Committee"), include practice area retreats, a Family Fun Day, children's and staff/professional holiday parties, participation in the K-100 Relay Race, golf tournament, and, firm ("TGIF") get-togethers throughout the year.
