SUMMER PROGRAM

WATERLOO REGION PROGRAM FOCUS

The Waterloo Region office typically hires two students each summer. Our summer program gives students an early opportunity to become acquainted with the many facets of the practice of law and with the unique approach at Gowlings.

Gowlings Waterloo Region prides itself on its congenial, professional atmosphere, made possible by the relatively small group of remarkable professionals that make up our staff. Able to offer the quality of work associated with a national law firm, the Gowlings Waterloo Region office provides a unique opportunity to develop national experience, while working in a smaller office and in an affordable community.

PRACTICE AREAS & INDUSTRIES

The Gowlings Waterloo Region Summer Program generally focuses on one of our two major practice areas – business law or advocacy.

With a broad clientele of national and multinational organizations, Gowlings Waterloo Region provides students with exposure to a wide variety of industries including Energy, Financial Services, Government Relations, Infrastructure, Mining, Manufacturing, Technology and Life Sciences.

STUDENT WORK LOAD

While we do not set a target number of hours for our students, they are generally expected to carry a workload similar to that of our associates. The annual budget for Gowlings Waterloo Region associates is 1750 docketed hours, which means approximately 35 docketed hours per week. Our students participate in weekly work allocation meetings to ensure equality of work distribution and exposure to a variety of skill sets and professionals within the Firm.

RECRUITMENT INFORMATION

We're looking for individuals who are passionate about the practice of law, dedicated to client service and driven to excel in everything they do. Our culture encourages collaboration, rewards innovation and recognizes the value of interests outside of school and work. At Gowlings we're all about the team, so we want people who recognize the value of teamwork, but who can also work independently when the occasion calls for it.

Students who will complete second-year law school in spring 2011 are strongly encouraged to apply to Gowlings Waterloo Region for a summer position. The Gowlings Waterloo Region will be hiring two summer students in 2011. The summer position will extend from mid-May, 2011 to mid-August, 2011.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

Gowlings Waterloo Region provides a rewarding and educational summer work experience. We actively develop our students through educational programs that provide insight, evaluation and hands-on experience with various areas of the law. Our comprehensive seminar program spans a wide variety of practice areas, and our constructive mentoring programs provide students with opportunities to work with – and learn from – our diverse and experienced professionals. Our students are also encouraged to define their own development, and to seek out and experience the work in which they are most interested.  Gowlings Waterloo Region is committed to providing comprehensive guidance and feedback to each student with respect to the work assigned.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Our commitment to our students includes a competitive salary, based on the market rate for articling students—currently $55,000 per annum (2009/10 term).

SOCIAL PROGRAM

During the summer months, we host a number of social events in which our summer students are encouraged to join, including our professionals’ golf tournament in late August, together with informal get-togethers as they arise.
