While there are no prescribed rotations for summer students, they benefit instead from receiving work from a broad variety of professionals in the firm. Students may also seek out work in which they are most interested. In addition, each summer student has a lawyer in the firm who acts as the student's mentor. Mentors assist students in managing their workload (including helping them to get work in which they have a special interest) and advise students about all manner of work-related and professional practice issues and concerns.
At Gowlings Hamilton, summer students are exposed to three practice areas: advocacy, banking litigation and business/technology law.
With a broad clientele of national and multinational organizations, Gowlings Hamilton provides students with exposure to a wide variety of industries including Energy, Financial Services, Infrastructure, Manufacturing and Technology.
We're looking for individuals who are passionate about the practice of law, dedicated to client service and driven to excel in everything they do. Our culture encourages collaboration, rewards innovation and recognizes the value of interests outside of school and work. At Gowlings we're all about the team, so we want people who recognize the value of teamwork, but who can also work independently when the occasion calls for it.
We have two students for the summer of 2010. Gowlings summer program is generally limited to students who have completed their second year of law school.
While we do not set a target number of hours for our students, they are generally expected to carry a workload similar to that of our associates. The annual budget for Gowlings Hamilton associates is 1750 docketed hours, which means approximately 35 docketed hours per week.
Gowlings Hamilton provides a rewarding and educational summer work experience. We actively develop our students through educational programs that provide insight, evaluation and hands-on experience with various areas of the law. Our comprehensive seminar program spans a wide variety of practice areas, and our constructive mentoring programs provide students with opportunities to work with – and learn from – our diverse and experienced professionals. Our students are also encouraged to define their own development, and to seek out and experience the work in which they are most interested.
Our commitment to our students includes a competitive salary, based on the market rate for students. Currently, our summer students are paid $54,080.00 per annum. Summer students who are hired back to become articling students the following year also receive a generous pre-articling bonus paid at the beginning of their third year of law school.
As part of the Gowlings Hamilton social program, our students enjoy a range of activities and social events. In the past these have included softball tournaments, curling bonspiels, hockey tournaments, skating events and bowling.
