In addition to hands-on experience, Gowlings is committed to providing you with professional development opportunities throughout the articling experience. Our student education and training programs include a variety of ‘how to’ seminars on topics tailored to a new lawyer’s needs. Training sessions and seminars include areas such as drafting motions and memoranda, legal research and writing, interviewing and negotiation techniques, conducting examinations for discovery and delivering winning presentations.

Gowlings offers articling students the chance to chart their own path, and will generally strive to accommodate individuals who are seeking extended experience within specific practice groups. Our students enjoy flexible rotation schedules that provide the broad base of knowledge and hands-on skills they need to successfully launch their careers.
As a student at Gowlings, you will gain practical experience by doing work that matters. We try to give our students a bit of everything. Your work experience could include drafting pleadings, commercial agreements and opinion letters; preparing motion records and arguing motions; attending examinations for discovery and mediations; attending closings; assisting at trials and appeals; and meeting and working with clients.
As part of the formal learning experience, our students receive an evaluation of their work, as well as informal feedback as often as possible. In addition, our students are linked with a Principal for individual support on things like litigation basics, courtroom deportment, conducting a closing and practice management skills.
